System Requirements

Overview

Open Inventor requires that the following components be installed and available on your workstation:

• OpenGL libraries


• A C++ compiler matching the version used to compile Open Inventor


• UNIX only: X11 R6 development and run-time environment


• UNIX only: Motif 2.1 development and run-time environment


• Adequate disk space.
  The following are approximate disk space requirements for an Open Inventor installation.
  • 400 MB Windows typical installation
  • 140 MB Windows compact installation
  • 550 MB Red Hat Enterprise Linux (typical installation)
  • 400 MB Solaris 2.8 (CC 5.x) typical installation
  • 500 MB IRIX 6.5 64 typical installation


• [OPTIONAL] If you plan to use the SoQt classes, you need the Qt SDK from Trolltech:
  • Qt 3.3.6 (or higher : Qt 3.x) on all the platforms except Visual Studio 2008 (Windows), or
  • Qt 4.2.2 (or higher : Qt 4.2.x and 4.3.x) on all the platforms.

The following lists the requirements specific to each platform.

Microsoft Windows

• Microsoft Windows XP (32-bit or x64-edition) or
  Microsoft Vista


• Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 (32 or 64 bit) or
  Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (32-bit or 64-bit) or
  Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003
  
  Notes:
  • The service pack 1 for Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 may potentially cause problems and regressions in the MFC-based libraries of Open Inventor for Visual Studio 2005. So, it is recommended to update your system using Microsoft Update after the Visual Studio 2005 Service Pack 1 installation.
  • Microsoft Visual Studio must be installed and run before installing Open Inventor.
    If Microsoft Visual Studio hasn't been run before, the Open Inventor installation program won't be able to perform the necessary setup for Microsoft Visual Studio, and the setup will have to be done manually afterwards. (See the section Configuring Microsoft Visual Studio for Use with Open Inventor.)
    Due to the nature of Microsoft Visual Studio, this setup is user-specific and must be done for every user. The Open Inventor installer sets up the Microsoft Visual Studio environment only for the user running the Open Inventor installation.
    
    
• In order to be able to use the Cg shading language, you must have Cg.dll, which is provided by Nvidia.

IMPORTANT NOTES about Visual Studio 2008, Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio .NET 2003

This is the production release of Open Inventor 7.2 for Windows XP and Vista.

Open Inventor 7.2 is available for Visual Studio 2008, Visual Studio 2005 and Visual Studio .NET 2003. These are separate installs with separate libs and DLLs. The libs and DLLs have the same name but can be distinguished using the right-click Properties menu item in Windows Explorer. You must use the Open Inventor install that corresponds to the compiler version that you're using.

The following table gives the recommended Open Inventor release according to the Microsoft Developer environment:

Additional notes:

• Visual C++ 6.0 & 5.0: Any modules of your application that include <windows.h> and Open Inventor header files must be compiled using the STRICT compiler directive.
• Visual C++ 5.0: You must install Visual Studio 97 Service Pack 3.

Sun Solaris

• Open Inventor for Sun Solaris works with Solaris 2.8 or later (e.g., SunOS 5.8 or later).
• Open Inventor releases for Sun Solaris 32-bit and 64-bit are available.
• OpenGL 1.2 (Sun OpenGL 1.2.2 or 1.2.3)
• Motif 2.1.0 must be installed.
• Sun Studio 11 sparc (C++ 5.8 Patch 121017-14).
• Applications using the Open Inventor multi-thread capabilities may sometimes freeze.
  If this kind of problem occurs, you must install the following Sun patches:
  • 108827-12 for Solaris 2.8

SGI IRIX

• Open Inventor requires IRIX 6.5.14m or higher.
• Libraries compatible with -n32 and -64 ABIs are available.
• The latest rld patches must be installed in order to use the Inventor shared libraries.
• Motif version is 2.1.4.
• C/C++ compiler version is 7.4.1m
• OpenGL version is 1.1 (1.1 IRIX 6.5).

HP-UX (HP9000)

• Open Inventor for HP works with 11.00.
  Under HP-UX 11.00 with aC++ 3.27, you may need to update your system installing the following patches:

  If your system is later than 11.00 (11.11, 11.20, etc.) or if aC++ is later than 3.27 (3.30, 3.31, etc.), you do not need to install all these patches. These patches could be replaced by newer ones.
  PHSS_30048 may make it impossible to display any Open Inventor window. Do not install it.
• This version is optimized for PA2.0 processors and cannot run on PA1.1 systems. It requires the HP aC++ compiler. The -AA compilation option is absolutely required.
• HP ANSI C++ compiler (HP aC++ B3911DB -> C.03.27) is available on HPUX 11.00 and later. This is a native compiler. It implements most of the ANSI draft features.
• Motif version is 2.1.0.
• OpenGL version is 1.1 Revision 1.26.

IBM AIX

• Open Inventor requires AIX 5.x.
• IBM VisualAge C++ 6.0 (with VisualAge C++ 5.0 name mangling compatibility).
• Motif version is 2.1.0.
