Uncovering Brazil’s Next Deepwater Opportunity

Basin in Focus: Pará-Maranhão Basin

Brazil's Equatorial Margin continues to attract significant exploration interest as operators pursue the next major deepwater hydrocarbon province. Positioned between the Foz do Amazonas and Barreirinhas basins, the Pará-Maranhão Basin (PAMA) remains one of the least explored deepwater basins offshore Brazil, with only two deepwater wells drilled, yet growing geological evidence suggests substantial discovery potential.

Latest Well Results

Recent drilling across the Equatorial Margin has strengthened confidence in the regional petroleum system. The Morpho well in the Foz do Amazonas Basin encountered hydrocarbon shows and live oil, while the Anhangá and Pitu Oeste wells in the Potiguar Basin have demonstrated active deepwater petroleum systems. Together, these results support the view that hydrocarbon generation, migration, and trapping are occurring across multiple basins along the margin.

The Exploration Story

PAMA was formed during the opening of the Equatorial Atlantic and was strongly influenced by pull-apart basin formation and transform tectonics. New seismic interpretation highlights extensive deepwater channel and fan systems, carbonate reservoirs, gravitational structural traps and amplitude-supported leads that may indicate active hydrocarbon charge. These elements point to a working petroleum system with multiple exploration play types. Much of this confidence rests on conjugate-margin analogy: Albian and Cenomanian-Turonian marine shales are firmly established source rocks in West Africa, but equivalent intervals in PAMA remain largely unconfirmed by direct well penetration. With only two deepwater wells drilled to date, PAMA's source rock potential is best described as de-risked by regional analogy but still awaiting local proof.

A significant magmatic episode spanning the Late Cretaceous through the Cenozoic further enhanced prospectivity. Large volcanic edifices generated lateral pinchout traps within growth strata and compaction-related structural closures in overlying sediments, creating additional trapping opportunities across the basin.

To support exploration, TGS has expanded its PAMA 3D multi-client survey to more than 30,000 km² of modern seismic coverage. Phase I covers approximately 19,000 km² across the central basin, including the Harpia-1 area, while Phase II adds 11,500 km² in the northwest. Combined with calibration from Harpia-1, the dataset provides a significantly improved understanding of reservoirs, traps, and charge risk across this frontier basin.

The Harpia-1 well remains an important calibration point, confirming key petroleum system elements and evidence of migrated hydrocarbons. With expanded 3D seismic coverage and encouraging regional well results, PAMA is transitioning from a basin defined by hydrocarbon shows to one characterized by multiple viable play concepts and genuine discovery potential.

As interest in Brazil's Equatorial Margin continues to grow, PAMA is positioned to attract increasing attention ahead of future licensing opportunities.
