In this work, the authors discuss some computational challenges for accurately modeling the elastic wavefield in the presence of strong contrast media. The authors illustrate their findings with results from a super-long offset, sparse OBN survey from the Gulf of México, highlighting the benefits of using the full elastic equations versus the acoustic approximation.
