Abstract
Full waveform inversion (FWI) has become a central component of modern velocity model building workflows, particularly in areas characterized by complex geology and strong velocity contrasts. In such settings, acoustic assumptions are often insufficient to reproduce key wave phenomena observed in seismic data, including mode conversions and guided wave energy. Elastic FWI provides a more complete physical description of wave propagation and has demonstrated improved robustness and accuracy in these environments.
