Scatec’s Kenhardt hybrid project is one of the world’s largest combined solar and battery installations, built in South Africa’s Northern Cape. The project integrates 540 MWp of solar PV with a 225 MW/1,140 MWh battery storage system, enabling Scatec to supply dispatchable renewable power from 5:00 am to 9:30 pm every day, a critical contribution in a market affected by severe load shedding and growing demand for reliable energy availability.

Designed to operate as a fully hybrid resource, Kenhardt requires precise coordination between PV generation, storage charging and discharging and grid obligations. With high volumes of real-time operational data coming from inverters, PCS units, trackers, weather sensors and substations, the site depends on a robust digital backbone to maintain reliability, ensure compliance and optimize output.

As one of Scatec’s flagship utility-scale hybrid assets, Kenhardt also serves as a template for how centralized operations, high-resolution data, and advanced analytics can support both day-to-day performance and long-term fleet scalability across geographies.

As hybrid PV + BESS systems grow in size and complexity, Scatec needed a platform that could unify operations across solar and storage, respond instantly to strict grid requirements, and provide consistent visibility across its global fleet. “We have been able to increase the BESS unit’s availability to achieve our most challenging period of the year (the winter solstice period).  Even with the expected degradation of the BESS, we have been able to increase energy storage availability by using the Prediktor solution.  We have also been able to detect over 95% of all critical plant downtime events remotely and dispatch field service personnel by using remote monitoring alone.  All of these critical events have been detected and were acted upon within 10 minutes of each event."
