Basin in Focus: Egypt's West Mediterranean Sea

Promising indications from the Velox-1 well provide optimism for hydrocarbon exploration in the Egyptian offshore region of the Herodotus Basin. Surrounded by the mature Nile Delta and onshore Western Desert areas, Egypt's West Mediterranean Sea (EWMS) is a frontier area for hydrocarbon exploration.

The Exploration Story

Several factors have kept this region on the sidelines until recently, including relatively deep water, limited infrastructure and a lack of seismic data. Until about 2015, little seismic data was readily available to the industry here. TGS reprocessed and made available roughly 10,000 km of legacy 2D data and 10,000 km² of legacy 3D data in 2016, followed by regional 2D campaigns that added 30,000 km of broadband 2D. This data formed the basis of a regional geological understanding and helped companies secure hydrocarbon exploration concessions in EWMS.

Since 2020, TGS has acquired eight MC broadband 3D surveys in areas with no existing 3D coverage, allowing exploration in the region to progress with a more detailed focus on targets.

Latest Well Results

On July 27, 2026, the Egyptian press announced promising results from the Shell Velox-1 well in the North Cleopatra concession. (Figure 1). Drilling began May 23 and reached its planned geological targets at a total depth of about 6,500 meters. Shell operates the well in partnership with Chevron and Tharwa Petroleum, and QatarEnergy is reportedly completing procedures to join the partnership. Exploration teams reportedly recovered a crude oil sample and are analyzing geological and technical data to determine the project's next phase, which could include additional appraisal and exploration wells.

With the Velox-1 well being only the fifth offshore well in this EWMS region, and the first real deep test of the basin, the results of this well have been hotly awaited. Major frontier discoveries have a way of changing industry perception. They don't just prove a prospect; they open new exploration fairways, reduce geological uncertainty, encourage further investment, and create momentum for neighboring acreage. If the Velox-1 well proves to be a significant commercial discovery, it would certainly fall into this category.
